Zen-Sunday in September

Chinese Forget-Me-Nots

This has been our first summer where we have been able to focus on our little farm. On this Sunday, with clouds-sun-clouds in the air and feeling very much like autumn, I took some time to prep the gardens for winter. My bee-friends were hanging out with me so I grabbed my new camera and started snapping shots. So, sharing them here too.

Chinese forget-me-nots are one of the late-bloomers in the “garden-variety” humming bird and butterfly wildflower seed mix.

Radish. Yes, Radish.

Last year, some native insect bored into my radishes, making them inedible. For fun, I just let the radishes go to flower, just to see what would happen. Low and behold, I discovered that the honey bees love radish blossoms.

Fast-forward to this year: Yes, we had success harvesting radishes, but I left several to flower. The delicate pink (or white) radish blossoms will bloom well into the fall. Yum.

Sunflowers

The large (solar eclipse) sunflowers that I like take about 120 days to blossom, which is the perfect time of year for a new pollen source. But “bee” careful…the squirrels like them too!
