Greenhouse

There were so many treasures found on our 2013 trip to Iceland. One little treat included delicate salad, served on the side of a large portion of a gratin-fish-potato-dinner. The salad portions were small and included simple green lettuce with radish sprouts and a vinaigrette. The greens were tender, “spicy,” and delicious and very much appreciated next to the buttery-rich Nordic dishes.  As we headed back to Reykjavik from the Fire and Ice tour, it was dusk. Off in the distance the greenhouses dotted the otherwise rocky and barren landscape.

It was at that moment that I knew I wanted to try a greenhouse. After all, if greenhouses could produce amazing salads at 66-degrees north, then why not here in Puget Sound?

Three years after our Iceland trip I happened to drive by this beautiful little greenhouse kit….this greenhouse is a miniature version of those that I saw in Iceland. I  just had to have it.

In 2017, we explored with Kratky hydroponics and had luck with some different lettuces. We also had a variety of pepper plants and heirloom tomatoes growing in dirt beds.

There is much to learn to understand what grows best here on our little farm. Looking forward to getting into growing season in 2018.
